Hola Oaxaca!

Hola Oaxaca!

We have two adventures scheduled for today, first up…Monte Albán.

These ruins also date back to 500BC. Yet what makes these distinct from the others we’ve explored – they were never lost. People always knew they were perched up high above Oaxaca

The ball court. The usual stuff happened here teams played against each other with a rubber ball. No one today knows the rules and are pretty sure neither team got sacrificed

The Zapotecs weren’t content just building on top of this mountain, they first needed to create a level surface. They basically cut the top right off so they could have a big open space for their city.

These depict the Zapotecs winning against rival communities. Most include the losing leader being castrated – ouch!
Check out that flat open field

From up here it’s like you can see forever. The valley drops below you then extends out to the horizon where it climbs up the surrounding mountains.

Second on the agenda, mezcal tasting. Janelle loves mezcal, I don’t like it at all. Tonight my mission is to find a mezcal that I like. I’m trying to be optimistic.

We just happened to come across a wedding

We tried 3 different spots, 4 drinks at the first place, 2 at the second, and 3 at the third. They told us all about where mezcal comes from, the different processes to make it…but somehow I can’t remember any of it. Not sure why…

The opening tasting

And, I’m pretty sure I haven’t acquired the taste for mezcal either. Mission busted

Then to complete our evening, Leòn our guide takes us to some fantastic, authentic Oaxaca street food. What a great way to end the night.
