Two Mexican Staples

Two Mexican Staples

Well, if we are to be completely honest, we enjoyed 4 Mexican staples today; food, Mezcal, Tequila and a Lucha Libre show.

We started our day off with a cooking class – and Jason was even able to join in this one! Salsa verde, salsa roja, guacamole, tortillas, enfrijoladas, cactus salad, huitlacoche (corn fungus – yep), roasted grasshoppers and zucchini flowers. We prepped, we chopped, we diced, we crushed, we stirred, we pressed, we flipped, we ate and we ate and we ate. Then we had a shot of mezcal.

Pretty good start to the day!

A shot of mezcal for the road.

Next up we got treated to some insider information from a former Lucha Libre competitor! She was so interesting as she told us about the history of Mexico’s second favourite past time. It started in the 1930’s as an inexpensive form of entertainment in a small village. By the early 1950’s a stadium that could hold 16,500 people had to be built. Wow. We also learned that most of the wrestler’s identities are completely secret. Those that wear a mask go to great lengths to keep their identity hidden from the public and sometimes even their families.

After a shot of tequila we donned our new masks and went to an actual Lucha Libre event. I don’t think we knew how good our seats were when we bought them – we were right beside the entrance aisle so we got a front row seat to all the wrestlers as they entered the arena. I even got to high five a number of them. I may never wash my hands again. LOL.

If nothing else, we can say with certainty that our evening was entertaining, high energy, hilarious, enthusiastic and so, so fun.

Jason – in training.
