Merida – Where Mexico Meets the Karate-ka.

Not that we need a reason to travel (have you met us??!!) but this time there is actually a real reason that we are here in Mexico: karate. The ISKF Shoto Cup is happening this weekend in Merida and we get to watch our daughter compete as she represents Team Canada. (Insert the biggest and proudest smiles here…)

Day 1 morning seminar in the books – this is just a fraction of the competitors that will be here this weekend. Thank you so much to Shihon Okazaki for the incredible class!!

A travel day from Puerto Vallarta to Merida (via Mexico City) made for a bit of a long day. We had to say good-bye to our travel/vacation buddies. 🙁 But, at the end of the day, we got to say hello to a bunch of our karate buddies.

The Last Breakfast. (Sniff – we will miss how well we’ve been taken care of here at Garza Blanca. Ooh – we will also miss our friends. Of course.)
We met our friends in Merida and tried sneaking a peak at the venue. We are so impressed with what is happening behind these doors!!

The next day brought the first training seminar of the weekend. Surrounded by representatives of 40 countries, hundreds of like minded karate-ka and all the energy that comes with international competitions is a feeling that needs to be experienced to be believed.

Finally we drove three hours to pick up the child and her friend and then drove back three hours. As a proper welcome them to Mexico we greeted the with road pops and deep fried grasshoppers.

Teagan couldn’t wait to try the grasshoppers. Literally could not wait. This is a picture of her eating the second grasshopper because the first one was chewed and swallowed before I got into the car. Maybe she was craving protein??
Not to be outdone, Anna downed her grasshopper just as enthusiastically! (There is not a single picture of me eating mine…)
Introducing the girls to road pops in Mexico. It is a rule that you must stop at the first convenience store to get a bevvie. None for the driver, of course. Sorry Jason…

Let the games begin…

The calm before the storm…
