Snorkeling the Silfra Fissure

The theme for today was water. This time though, not in the way of waterfalls. We woke up to gusting winds and torrential rains – oof. The drive to Silfra was exciting to say the least.

Walking from our car to the staging lot, we were soaking wet before we even saw the water in which we were to be snorkeling. Luckily, Arctic Adventures was well prepared. We got insulated thermal suits to put over our (rather damp) skin layer then they proceeded to dress us in the bulkiest dry suits I’ve ever had the pleasure of wearing.

Walking in these suits was hilarious, and we weren’t even wearing our fins yet. LOL.

Ooh. We like this! We are quite warm now. Right up until we got into the glacial water that is the Silfra fissure. Brrrr. But, as soon as we put our faces into the water, we didn’t care. WOW! We could see clearly for at least 100m – the water was so blue and clean. Amazing.

The Sifra Fissure sits between two major tectonic plates – the Eurasian and North American – and is filled with water from the Langjokull glacier. It is the only place in the world where you can snorkel (or scuba dive) between two continents. What an incredible experience, 100% recommend.

Here comes Janelle – but the cool part of this is the water. Look how clear it is!

Besides, after we got out, all excited, wet and freezing cold. The staff reversed their course, undressed us like we were toddlers and then fed us hot chocolate and cookies. Aaaahhh.
