Iceberg – Dead Ahead!

Iceberg – Dead Ahead!

A couple of hikes to kick the day off for us, then a zodiac ride to visit a glacier!

The first one is going to take us to the foot of one of the 32 tongues of the glacier covering the top of Iceland. Turns out hike is a strong word for this one, from the parking lot to the glacier was 20 minutes. Low effort with high reward, my kind of hike!

The foot of the Svínafellsjökull glacier

Our second one is a 10 minute drive away to the next parking lot. And this one comes with a campground full of campers. Luckily, we are not campers! Lol

We get to see three waterfalls in the first 45 minutes on this one. Then, once we keep going for another 30 minutes we see the grand lookout. Here, you can see forever. We’ve said it before, we’ll say it again…but this scenery is absolutely stunning!

At the Sjónarnípa viewpoint overlooking the Skaftafell Glacier

Now we’re head over to where the glacier meets the ocean at Glacier Lagoon of all places. Pieces calve off all day long creating multiple icebergs. Big, small, translucent blue, or opaque white – they are all here. And of course we are only see the top 10%, as the remaining 90% is under water.

This Arctic Tern was not happy with me getting so close to where they were. Turns out it’s mating season, does this mean am I competition?
This guys just laid there and let us take his photo for 10 minutes

As we’re investigating the iceberg field for seals, one of the larger ones starts to collapse & tumble right before our very eyes!! Luckily our captain is keeping a respectful distance from these big ones as things got exciting very quickly.

Time now sooth all those muscles in a jacuzzi, how we’ve missed ours.

What a great way to end the day

Early start today, but it’s for a good cause. We have one last sight to see and it’s the Blue Lagoon. Our last day with the Jimny, pretty sure we won’t miss it Our 7am check in is just 45 minutes away down the highway. So it mean our wake up alarms went off at 5:30am....

Snorkeling the Silfra Fissure

Snorkeling the Silfra Fissure

The theme for today was water. This time though, not in the way of waterfalls. We woke up to gusting winds and torrential rains - oof. The drive to Silfra was exciting to say the least. Rain, rain, go away!! Walking from our car to the staging lot, we were soaking wet...

Road Trip!

Hunting Waterfalls

Iceland: the land of fire and ice...and waterfalls! Somehow we are still impressed by water falling over cliffs. How can they be so alike and yet so different? It has been many days of oohing and aahing over waterfalls and here we are at day fifty still as giddy at...

Ice cream!

Ice cream!

Life is too short to go without ice cream and it seems like forever since we’ve had some. Not because we couldn’t find any - it’s just been too cold. And starting off the day it didn’t seem likely that we’d be looking for some as the clouds looked like they had...

An Evening Kayak

Back home if we had a day like today, I would say that we were soooo busy. Here though, it feels like we had one of our quieter days. I've never felt Spirit of the West's lyrics, "I need home for a rest" more profoundly than today. Starting the day with a latte and a...

For one day...does that seem like a lot? Not too many? Enough? I guess normally, I would say that at least half of them are garbage, doubles or throw aways. But not today. Each image is unique. Each image is amazing. Each image is a keeper. Crap. That is a lot of...

Back in the day I’d call our wake up time Oh-Dark- Thirty. However, it’s not very dark this morning at 3:30am where we are. And just like that, it’s time to say goodbye to Norway - the land of fjords and tunnels. It’s not very dark this morning We made it! Another...
