Considering we’re not hikers, we do recognize that some trails are way better than others.
There are some where you don’t see anything all day long. Others where you wonder why you’re even on the trail in the first place. Others will always tell you “you’re almost there, it’s just around the corner, another 5 minutes”. These are all lies!
I’ve also learned to not look at the app to see how much further we have to go as it’s never the answer I’m seeking.
Today is going to be a banger of a trail, but we’re going to have to earn it. 14km with 900m of elevation gain over the course of 5 hours.
The first part is a pretty straightforward local road and will take us up to some very remote dwellings. It’s there we are to decide how we want to see the waterfall – from the bottom or from the top. Guess which adventure we chose?
So, let’s go to the top! Admittedly for the next hour and a half I was seriously wondering if this was the right decision. Switchback after switchback, sections with chains, and some really steep parts. It never seemed to end.
But then, daylight. The top, the blessed top. It was then we ran into another couple we have been following who were on their way down. And this is what they tell us – they never saw the waterfall, there’s nothing to see…. What?! No. It can’t be. We trudge on.
We cross the bridge that spans the river that goes over the cliff; Janelle wisely (stubbornly?) continues on.
If that couple just kept going another 5 minutes past the bridge, they too would have had their breath taken away
