Untitled – Because there are no words…

How can I possibly sum up today with a short title? I can’t. There isn’t a word in the English language that might encompass the vision that awaited us at the top of our hike. Preikestolen – Pulpit Rock to us English speakers – is an extremely popular hike in the Southwest part of Norway.

This path to Pulpit Rock was upgraded by actual Nepalese Sherpas in 2013 and 2014.

When we pulled into the parking lot filled with buses and tour groups, we were fooled into thinking that the 8.5km hike would be fast and easy. Ha. It was easy to follow, the trail was beautifully laid out and it was near impossible to lose your way. But the 450m of elevation were no joke. The boulders and rocks and steps were a significant challenge to climb. The heat, while so welcome (the day started with rain), was unrelenting. Zero shade.

We were continually surprised at some of the people on the trail. We think they, too, were lulled into a false sense of security. At least everyone seemed to be wearing proper footwear and were carrying water bottles.

Anyway. Wow. At the risk of overusing this word – just WOW. The cliff jutted out from the mountain side creating a huge platform on which you could walk on, sprawl about and take in the fjords below. There is a huge split right down the middle of the platform teasing you with the possibility that it just may fall off. Eek.

We all politely stood in a line to take advantage of the best photo spot and as long as everyone played by the rules, you were able to get a picture that looked like you were the only person on the rock.

100% recommend this hike. Worth every drop of sweat.

We have the memory…not the picture.

We live in one of the most beautiful places in the world and the beauty of the Lofoten Islands comes in a very close second. The landscape just begs to be explored. How could we refuse? Would you expect it to be so green at 68.2 degrees north? We certainly didn't....

Our last day in Finland gets us to the Arctic Circle (brrr) and Santa's Village. I know, I know, we're not at THE North Pole, but I could be convinced that this really is Santa's Village. Or maybe it is just his summer home. If this is Santa's summer getaway...he must...

Our day starts off slowly today with a visit to the local Heritage Park. A collection of buildings and dwellings found in the surrounding communities brought together. We are here early enough in the season that we have two private guides, one who just started 3 days...

Ice Ice Baby

After two days of beautiful sunshine and high temperatures, we woke up to the cold and the rain. We could let this ruin our day OR we could double down. Yep, when things get cold, we get colder. Walking through a giant igloo! We had heard of an ice cave only a few...

Hiking and Camping???

Okay...but in the loosest way possible. You know us. We barely hike and we certainly don't camp. So the fact that today had a surprise hike (and we weren't even a bit phased by it, or upset) and that we ended up in a campground...well...who the heck are we?? This is...
