Skiing? In Denmark??

Skiing? In Denmark??

In a country where the highest point may be a mere 170 meters, it does beg the question: What kind of skiing are we actually doing?? It can’t be cross country because, well, there is no snow. Could it be water skiing? Yeah…it could…but it’s not. Huh. It must be the most boring downhill skiing ever. Right?

Oh boy, that couldn’t be further from the truth. It has to be said that Jason and I are both fairly good skiers – we are confident on the mountain, can do black diamonds without fear AND with some skill, plus, we are confident in almost all of the skiing situations we’ve been faced with. Until today.

Less than 20 seconds in…on the Bunny Hill (if you can avoid the tricks). This does not bode well…

We are at a garbage dump turned energy plant turned energy plant with a recreation area to directly benefit the public. In addition to being able to hike and walk amongst the many trails, you can climb up the 85 meter tall, exterior rock climbing wall or you can go skiing down the 450 meter ski slope, which is (thankfully) broken up into black, blue and green sections.

Can you see the climbing wall?? Who in their right mind does that??? Yikes.
Garbage dump turned energy plant that comes with a smoking stack as a byproduct.

The slope is made of a plastic – Neveplast – and actual grass is growing underneath it. What a learning curve. It is not like skiing on snow. It is like skiing on ice. As a newbie. Pure ice. As a newbie who has never seen skis before, let alone been on them. We felt like newborn deer trying to get our footing. It was both humbling and embarrassing. But, OMG, was it ever fun. Exhausting. Terrifying. Thrilling. And fun. So, so fun. So much so, we convinced four other people who were watching to go for it!

We lasted almost an hour, and then wisely decided to leave the hill as the confidence in our skill grew to a point that likely surpassed our actual skill. No need to injure ourselves on the first day of our bike tour!

Because yeah…that is what today is really about! Our bike tour started today with a 40km loop around Amager Island which is just across from Copenhagen. So far I cannot stress enough how enjoyable it is to ride here. It is so flat. So flat. So, so, so flat. Even the wind didn’t bother me. It feels so good to be back on a bike!

The final item on our to-do list for Copenhagen was to visit Reffen – the Street Food Experience. The worst thing about this place is that there is no way you’ll be hungry enough to try all the food trucks. A super fun, trippy and diverse place to have supper. Or a snack. Or a drink. I mean AND a drink.

Hydrate before you die-drate…right?

Couldn’t resist the Funky Mango. Perfect after a day of bike riding AND skiing.

We have the memory…not the picture.

We live in one of the most beautiful places in the world and the beauty of the Lofoten Islands comes in a very close second. The landscape just begs to be explored. How could we refuse? Would you expect it to be so green at 68.2 degrees north? We certainly didn't....

Our last day in Finland gets us to the Arctic Circle (brrr) and Santa's Village. I know, I know, we're not at THE North Pole, but I could be convinced that this really is Santa's Village. Or maybe it is just his summer home. If this is Santa's summer getaway...he must...

Reindeer on the road

Ice Ice Baby

After two days of beautiful sunshine and high temperatures, we woke up to the cold and the rain. We could let this ruin our day OR we could double down. Yep, when things get cold, we get colder. Walking through a giant igloo! We had heard of an ice cave only a few...

Hiking and Camping???

Okay...but in the loosest way possible. You know us. We barely hike and we certainly don't camp. So the fact that today had a surprise hike (and we weren't even a bit phased by it, or upset) and that we ended up in a campground...well...who the heck are we?? This is...

A nice slow start to our day today as we didn’t crack the door to outside until noon. Sometimes you need these days and this was one of those days. It allowed us to recharge ourselves for exploration, to get set to see Suomenlinna or Sveaborg. It’s the fortress at the...
