There’s always time for a Spritz

We start off the day touring The Round Tower or as we Danes say…Rundetaarn.

Built in the mid-1600s by King Christian IV to be a church, library , and an observatory. It was here that in 1676 Ole Rømer discovered that light had speed. There were some smart dudes back then.

All of this, and only two toilets. One for the observers and the other for everyone else. It is said that pipe smoking was quite popular while sitting on the toilet as it was quite fragrant in the Danish summer. lol

Then we check out the river tour. Turns out this same king loved Amsterdam so much (and their rich Dutch merchants) he wanted to have an entire canal system himself. He was convinced that this would draw those rich merchants here to help put more taxes into his royal coffers. He only got one canal and he didn’t get his merchants – they already had their canals in Amsterdam.

Originally built by King Christian IV (yup, same guy) then expanded over the next 400 years Copenhagen’s fortress has seen quite a bit of action. The Swedes, then the Brits, and last the Germans.

I don’t think the Danes ever won one of these defences but still it’s a nice fortress to visit today. Even comes with a windmill.

Then the heavens open and we are now having the true Copenhagen experience. But that doesn’t dampen our enthusiasm for visiting the Little Mermaid, Churchillparken (named in honour of Churchill), plus one of the local bike parking lots.

We’re bringing this back for the front yard!
