Waterfalls & Airplanes

After all of yesterday’s sitting around, it’s time to get up off our butts and put some steps in. Luckily we are just 20 minutes away from Plitvice Lakes National Park which has all sorts of waterfalls, trails, trams & boats. We plan on seeing them all!

Today’s trail is brought to you by the Letter H. A combo of a few trails that will take us to all of the waterfalls, the Upper & Lower Lakes and keep us busy between 4 – 5 hours. It doesn’t let us down. We set off right away down the trail and stumble upon a side quest – a lookout. Who doesn’t love a good lookout?!

The autumn colours are out! We just don’t get these vibrant colours in Calgary – it goes from greeny-brown to browny-white overnight. This is amazing!

Seeing all of these waterfalls is giving me the inspiration to try some of my photography knowledge that has been passed down to us from our photography friends. Janelle puts on her patient face as I try and get the perfect shot(s).

Considering what happened to this frog, I’m taking Croatian signs way more seriously!

After 6 hours, 25,000 steps over 15 kms, and 415 metres of elevation gain we are back in the car and on our way to an abandoned Yugoslavian air base that’s nearby. Construction of the Željava Air Base began in 1948 and completed in 1968. It has two major runways with it’s hangars tunnelled into the adjacent mountain.

Ultimately destroyed in 1992, it’s now a destination for Urban Explorers. A very cool destination – just don’t go exploring too far, you may come across some unexploded mines.
