Road Trip Food

Today was a long day in the car. 520 kilometers. In my mind that is five hours, maybe five and a half if you stop for a sit-down meal on the way. So when Google told us nine hours and two minutes, I was skeptical.

Google didn’t lie.

Luckily there are street vendors at almost every town, village or city. Hmmmm. What a great way to try – or at least see – some of the local snack foods! Fresh coconut covered in spices and hot sauce, puffed rice chips covered in spices and hot sauce, fresh oranges covered in…you guessed it…spices and hot sauce. We passed on the elote – covered in spices and hot sauce and the oysters but only because oysters rarely seem like a good idea, let alone when they are being sold in a plastic baggie in 35 degree heat.

Those delicacies along with a bag of chips or two and we were happy while we navigated tight roads, construction, heat and detours.

You have to try the local flavours, right??

We made it!

Aaaahhhh. The Pacific Ocean at last. It is windy thanks to Hurricane Raquel.

PS – It is Truth and Reconciliation Day back home in Canada; our hearts and thoughts are with the indigenous communities as we honour the survivors, families, and communities affected by the Indigenous residential school system and remember the children who never returned home.
