Time to leave the rolling hills and jungle of Chiapas state behind and onwards to Tabasco. We are heading to the ancient Mayan city of Joy Chan located just outside of Comalcalco.

A few hours on the road will make anyone hungry, so as we roll into town we start looking for a good place to stop. Today we stop at The Giant Chicken, or as locals know it as El Pollo Gigante! At first we figured this restaurant would cater to the touristy crowd, but no…all local.

With lunch behind us it’s time to head to the site. Wouldn’t you know it? As soon as we’re setting out, the heavens open up and it RAINS for a good 20 minutes – we barely have the time to find shelter before getting soaked.
What makes this site unique to the others that we’ve visited is that they used oven fire bricks instead of stones. They used bricks because well, they simply didn’t have stones to build with. It reminds me of what you’d see in Ancient Rome.

It’s now 5:00 and we find ourselves at what I’m going to call the nicest bar in town, La Maria.
