The Big Shakedown

In 5 hours we should be in our next national park, Palenque.

It’s going to take us a good hour to get down the access road to the main highway, so we’re on a keen lookout for more wildlife.

Success! We see a fox, more turkeys, a tarantula, then either an aardvark…or wild boar – the jury’s still out on that one. A great way to start the road trip today.

Pretty uneventful until we roll into, then out of Escárcega. We’re stopped at the roadside checkpoint on the way out of town and get selected to have a chat with the supervisor. Great chat, where are we from, where are we going, is this a rental car sort of stuff. He’s even telling us how much we’re going to enjoy the next few evenings with what we have planned.

Unfortunately – we’ve had a traffic violation…we didn’t turn on our hazard lights as we approached the checkpoint. Now, normally this would be a 3000 pesos fine, but luckily he’s willing to reduce it to 1000 pesos if we pay him on the spot. I haven’t heard of this traffic law, but we take him up on his offer and we are again on our way. I never did ask for a selfie

With that behind us and forgotten about we roll into our digs for tonight – Chan-Kah Resort Village just outside of Palenque.

We have a cute standalone room at the end of the resort. Unfortunately there was so much rain yesterday that the creek running through here overflowed into the pool. They have all hands on deck trying to make it swimmable again.

Perhaps tomorrow
