I’m getting used to this breakfast included thing. Today, waffles with banana and chocolate syrup. And the view – that’s included too

Today we push even further up the Yucatan Peninsula towards the archaeological site of Calakmul. It’ll take us 4ish hours to get there.
Though before we go, we just have to see the local fortress. Built way back in the early 1700s to keep those pesky British from invading from what is now Belize.

Now 4 hours is quite the stretch to be on the road, and wouldn’t you know there are vendors in every community along the way. So, once we see the empanada stand we know we need to stop.

And, there are Maya ruins just 500 meters just off the highway. Experts figure Chicanná was an afluente satellite community to the capital Becán. The IG photo here is the gigantic open mouth of the Maya Earth Monster.

A police check stop (no photos…sorry!) and lots of speed humps later we find ourselves at our accommodation for the next two nights, Hotel Tren Maya – Calakmul.
