Life is too short to go without ice cream and it seems like forever since we’ve had some. Not because we couldn’t find any – it’s just been too cold. And starting off the day it didn’t seem likely that we’d be looking for some as the clouds looked like they had settled in for the day.

But no! They moved off as we started checking out Dimmuborgir, meaning the Black Fortress. We quickly see why. The lava fields have transformed the area into what appears to be a fortress.

Next up – Skútustaðagígar, the pseudo-craters on the southwest edge of Lake Myvatn. And this stop includes our ice cream. What better way to wander around the area checking out the birds.

On the way back to our room we decide to visit the newly renovated (reopened 5 days ago) Earth Lagoon Myvatn.

On our way there we find this cave with a natural hot spring right in it. However, they don’t allow anyone to bathe there anymore after an incident where the temperature of the water climbed to over 80°! Another fun fact: Game of Thrones shot a scene here. Jon Snow, Ygritte, and warm pond…IYKYK

Back to the Earth Lagoon…they have done an amazing job. They’ve incorporated the surround lava rock right into the design, and then have maximized the view with their infinity pool. And of course a bar.

Last stop is Námafjall Hverir. A quick stop by the side of the road with dramatic steam shooting up from the earth. Plus, it’s just a little smelly for good measure.
