You know the genius named Nikola Tesla? Yep. That guy. We went to the Nikola Tesla Memorial Center in the teeny town of Smiljan. This guy really was revolutionary. Our understanding of electricity and the way we use it today would not have been possible without his brain. As we turned on the lights to our room, we said a silent thank-you to this guy.
Rovinj, a picturesque coastal town in the Istrian region is our next destination four hours away. It is so close to Italy that there is a distinct Italian influence all over the region. Nothing but olive oil and wine everywhere we looked. We were a little hesitant to go and visit another Old Town, especially after the amazing experience we’ve just had in Dubrovnik, but ALL the reviews say that this place is a must-see. Guess what? They’re right.
The streets wind their way up, down and around. We follow endless cobblestone roads, up narrow alleys, down wide roads and around the Adriatic Sea coast. The houses and buildings are different from any other Old Town we’ve seen; they are brightly painted. There is a good mix of old charm and modern conveniences which I imagine makes it easier for the locals to live there!
What really blew our minds was that it was like walking through a ghost town. After all the tourists we saw in Dubrovnik, it was so weird seeing the ‘winter slowdown’ here in Rovinj. We took so many pictures of wide open streets, only us in front of significant structures and people-less landscape shots. Photography has never been so easy.
