St. Patrick’s Day in Lisbon

St. Patrick’s Day in Lisbon

Today takes us back to Lisbon. Last time we were here we walked from the bus station to the airport. I’m sure today will be much more enjoyable. Ha!

Our first two stops are the impressive Jerónimos Monastery and the famous pastry shop next door. The pastry is a tart filled with custard topped with cinnamon and powered sugar. Of course it’s delicious!

The monastery first opened in the 15th century and it still commands a presence here down by the waterfront. A close second…the line to get in. And these folks already have tickets. We save our visit for next time in Lisbon.

Next on the list is the Belém Tower. Built in the early 1500s, this was a fortified defensive position for the protection of Lisbon. Now, it’s a UNESCO site and unfortunately closed for restoration. Next time Lisbon.

Okay…Tram 28 is up next. This vintage wooden tram is going to take us around old part of town and we’ll jump off close to the pub. Our real destination for the afternoon.

After a great afternoon singing and dancing for St. Patrick’s Day

O’Gilíns Irish Pub – you have just what we need. A guitarist from Ireland, a room full of Irish, red wine and a pint of Guinness. So much fun, great people – it made us miss Ireland.

Now we’re hungry!

Time to find something to eat at Time Out Market Lisboa

Dinner with Odin

Tonight we’re eating with the Vikings and their gods Odin, Thor and the twins, Freyr & Freyja. But first, there’s a mountain to climb. Offersøykammen, a hike that should take us no more to an 3 hours, but with over 450m of elevation gain in less than 4km…this...

Well, it was a rainy day today. Luckily there were no hikes scheduled. Phew. Truth be told, I'm not sure our quads could have taken another hike today... That is a sky you don't want to be hiking under! Ooh...starting to clear up a little bit, now we can actually see...

We have the memory…not the picture.

We have the memory…not the picture.

We live in one of the most beautiful places in the world and the beauty of the Lofoten Islands comes in a very close second. The landscape just begs to be explored. How could we refuse? Would you expect it to be so green at 68.2 degrees north? We certainly didn't....

We are leaving Finland this morning with so many fond memories that we’ll have forever. So it is with mixed feelings that we board our flight back to Norway. This time to Tromsø, Norway. 70°N latitude (or pretty close) for you nerds out there. This is the furthest...

Our last day in Finland gets us to the Arctic Circle (brrr) and Santa's Village. I know, I know, we're not at THE North Pole, but I could be convinced that this really is Santa's Village. Or maybe it is just his summer home. If this is Santa's summer getaway...he must...

Reindeer on the road

Reindeer on the road

Still basking in the glow of yesterday’s race, we start heading up the road again. This has all the hallmarks of one hell of a Korean horror movie Our first pit stop is a roadside art exhibit called The Silent People. About a thousand ‘peat-headed characters’ in a...

As you likely already know...we did a thing. Like entered a young person's competition. What on earth were we thinking? Finland's Wife Carrying Championship...ready or not...here we come. (Disclaimer: we do not have any footage of our race...yet. It was live streamed...

What have we gotten ourselves into?

What have we gotten ourselves into?

Our day starts off slowly today with a visit to the local Heritage Park. A collection of buildings and dwellings found in the surrounding communities brought together. We are here early enough in the season that we have two private guides, one who just started 3 days...

Ice Ice Baby

Ice Ice Baby

After two days of beautiful sunshine and high temperatures, we woke up to the cold and the rain. We could let this ruin our day OR we could double down. Yep, when things get cold, we get colder. Walking through a giant igloo! We had heard of an ice cave only a few...

Hiking and Camping???

Hiking and Camping???

Okay...but in the loosest way possible. You know us. We barely hike and we certainly don't camp. So the fact that today had a surprise hike (and we weren't even a bit phased by it, or upset) and that we ended up in a campground...well...who the heck are we?? This is...

Fortresses, Fresh Noodles & Finnish Saunas

A nice slow start to our day today as we didn’t crack the door to outside until noon. Sometimes you need these days and this was one of those days. It allowed us to recharge ourselves for exploration, to get set to see Suomenlinna or Sveaborg. It’s the fortress at the...
