We had four fabulous days here in the Azores. San Miguel Island to be precise. We have a bit of time left before our plane takes off so we hit the streets and see what the city we are staying in, Porto Delgado, has to offer.
First though, we need some sustenance. There is a diner down by the water and the sounds of people laughing, dishes clanging and the local language being spoken reeled us in, or maybe I should say, onto the patio. There we had a full plate of eggs, bacon and toast with some freshly squeezed OJ and the thickest, richest hot chocolate I have ever had in my life. The perfect way to start a day of sightseeing.

The city is very cute with its black and white buildings, black and white cobblestone streets and the charming town squares. We have a look at the church, the historical gates, the market and the shoreline. We notice a cruise ship has landed and it explains all the tourists we are walking with.

There was also a fortress, which has now been turned into a military museum – a very thorough military museum. To be completely honest, the most interesting part of this museum, for me, was the fortress itself. It was quite intact still and had so many nooks and crannies, tunnels and rooms. Every part of the fortress was filled with military memorabilia.

The weather was now perfect for hiking, but it was time for us to head to the airport. We return our car, check in, and find a restaurant to plunk ourselves for a couple of hours. Then, before too long, we are on our way to Porto for the next part of our adventure.
