Today, September 30, is National Truth and Reconciliation Day back home in Canada. We’d like to take a moment to recognize and honour the Indigenous communities that make up our beautiful country.

How do you know you’re getting older? Plan a ‘vacation’ with three adventure days in a row. Via Ferata. Rafting. Canyoning. Kayaking. What were we thinking? We are having trouble walking – thanks Via Ferata. Our shoulders and back are killing us – thanks rafting. We are bruised and battered and our abs are screaming – thanks canyoning. Now we are expected to kayak 2.5 hours down the river? Honestly. What were we thinking???

We all get to test the strength of our marriages as we are partnered up in a double kayak. Jason takes the lead and is the one ‘in control’. Our communication skills better be working – we are tired, we are sore and we are not the best kayakers. This could get interesting.

Our luck changed as soon as we started our journey. Not only did we have a tail wind that stayed with us the whole way, but there was also a very significant current that carried us down the river. Our oars actually dried off in between uses. All in all, we really only had to paddle the last 10 minutes.

I think we heard angels singing.

Instead of paddling and accruing pain and discomfort, we got to chit chat with other people in our regatta, take a good look around us and enjoy the scenery and be on the lookout for water snakes. It was glorious. Except for the water snakes. We relaxed, we stretched out, we soaked up the sunshine, we chilled. If kayaking was like this all the time, I’d be first in line.

At the end of the 6km float, we were able to do a bit of snorkeling in the Adriatic Sea. There just happened to be a shipwreck a few metres from the shore. I’m sure it was legit. Either way, it was fun to explore and see the different types of fish swimming in and out of it.

As it is our last night in Omiš, we made sure to check out the cave bar before heading out to dinner. Dinner, as usual, was amazing. The service was even better. To send us off in style, they made sure to give us shots of their homemade liquor. Lighter fluid for the guys and a sweet syrup for the ladies. Completely sexist, but I was not mad that I didn’t have to drink the lighter fluid.

I can’t believe yet another chapter in this book is over. Adventure Package complete. I can’t wait until I can walk properly again.
