We are ready to give this cycling thing another go! We are leaving in the morning, when it is only 20°C and we are rested, hydrated and ready! Our destination? Alcudia, a town only 21km away, that offers a market, a walled city and some Roman ruins. Sounds like a pretty good day.
The ride to town went really well, a nice breeze, easy roads, and not a lot of hills. We arrived at the gates of Alcudia’s old town in good spirits, ready to explore the area. It was market day, so it was packed!
We weren’t really looking for anything, so we did a cursory browse then found a cafe to get a drink – we are really trying hard to stay ahead of hydration.

The Roman ruins are just outside the walled city so we head over there. They were very interesting and covered a very large area. Apparently the ruins are of a city – the main street filled with shops and vendors, plus some residences, a church or two and some areas of cultural significance. How they know this, I’ll never understand. A bit further on, you come upon the amphitheater which is very well preserved. That was extremely cool! We were here for an hour and the sun came out in full force. It got HOT.
After buying more ice cold water, we climbed the wall of the walled city to do a perimeter check. Seeing the city from this viewpoint was pretty neat.
We could imagine being on the lookout for incoming enemies back in the day. Then it was time for more drinks. Yep. And when I say drinks, I do NOT mean alcohol. Nope. Juice, water, coke and more water. It was very hard to keep on top of it!

It is now 31°C and we have to think about getting back to the hotel. By bike. Ugh. This could be tricky. We were very smart this trip. We stopped every few kilometers in the shade to cool our body temperature, we drank so much water, although it was very warm 6km in and we took as many breaks as we thought we needed. And then we took a couple more. We made it back to the hotel – tired, sweaty, DONE, but successful and up for trying it again!
