Goseong to Sokcho

Korean Adventure Day 13 (54km, 263m)

It is all feeling a little bit surreal. Today is it. The last day. The finale. The bookend. The final leg. La fin.

Already. It has gone by crazy fast. I can’t believe that, other than a couple of short taxi boosts, I was able to finish this ride. Yay me!! Seemingly unclimbable hills were scaled and never ending kilometres were crushed.

Back on our bikes to get back to Sokcho. We are anticipating an easy ride, following the trail we have already travelled.

Our first POI is Korea’s first president, Syngman Rhee’s cottage from the early 20th Century. What this man was able to achieve in his lifetime is nothing short of amazing. I think we all learned something new and interesting there today.

Next up, we are passing through the Fish Festival again. We have time to explore the stalls and watch some games. Including the fish catching!  Hilarious watching everyone jump around a pool trying to catch these fish with their hands. And when they do, they take them to the booth to get them killed, gutted, skinned, and sliced & diced for immediate consumption. Being a Saturday, it was much livelier and was fun to be a part of. We even got treated to the soldiers’ talent show rehearsal.

The last POI is the Cheongganjeong Pavilion. Back in the day—like waaaayyy back—nobles would come here and relax while staring out at the unique and beautiful scenery. The actual structure has since been rebuilt—the last change being in 2012, but the views are the important part.

We are now mere kms from our hotel. We cross a couple of enormous bridges, take an elevator down and meander through the busy streets of Sokcho. And then, as if by magic, we are in the hotel parking lot.

Victory cheers erupt, high fives are given, smiley photos are taken and cold beer is drunk. All well deserved.

  • 9 days on a bike
  • 1 rest day
  • 574 km
  • 4078 m of climbing

The ride is over, but our day is not. We are hungry!!  Sang has chosen a Chinese restaurant. We have our fill of some very spicy food and give ourselves a lot more cheers. What a night.

Well done team!  Paul and Sang have done the most amazing job at keeping this trip going. We saw so many things, stayed in all kinds of places, ate EVERYTHING Korea has to offer and got to explore the coastline in the most perfect way.

Bridges and Bridges

We whittled our options down and are now on our way to the area of Arouca where there is the longest pedestrian suspension bridge in Portugal, maybe even all of Europe. It was built in 2020 for the sole purpose of attracting tourists. It is essentially a bridge to...

Earning our Spa Day

It’s another spa day for us…you can’t have too many! But first we have to earn it. So, up and out the door to find our hike for the morning. We are travelling to the Serra da Estrela Nature Park about an hour away. An hour uphill though! Switch backs and soaring...

Obrigada Porto, but it is time to move on.

We loved walking around Porto, the riverfront there is amazing, so lively and vibrant. It was bittersweet saying goodbye to it because it means that our time here in Portugal is drawing to a close (boo!) and there is still so much of the country that we want to see....

The Band is Back Together!

We are back together in Porto! A week just flew by. For me lots of tennis and for Janelle lots of encouragement to learn knitting while being bribed with wine. Today we set out to see Livraria Lello, the bookstore that legend has it that it was one of the inspirations...

When you are this close to Spain, of course one must go and explore it a bit. Luckily our cruise director thought of this as well. He's a pretty smart guy. It is a two hour bus ride into the city of Salamanca, a UNESCO site known as the Golden City because of all the...

That’s Nuts!

We set sail today for our easternmost docking point along the Douro River, just on the other side of the border and into Spain. Along the way the knitters knitted; I eavesdropped in on a class about sweater math. OMG. The amount of things I don't know will never cease...

So, just how good are you?

A very exciting day today as I get to walk upon the tennis court here at Vale do Lobo Tennis Academy. It’s been 5 weeks since I’ve swung a racquet and turns out quite a bit of rust needs chipping off. Very nice facility here Coach Eureko will be assessing me today to...

That’s it, we’re splitting up!

Today's the day, we're calling it. It's over. Just kidding - we are just going our separate ways for a week. This whole trip came about because I said 'YES!' to my friend Janet when she asked me to go on a Knit and Sip river cruise along the Douro River. Why would I...
