Type 2 Fun is Still Fun, Right?

Type 2 Fun is Still Fun, Right?

We got to find out the answer to that today.

You need to remember that we aren’t hikers or outdoorsy people. I realize that our activities while traveling may contradict that, but I wouldn’t lie to you. We are fair weather people. I would even argue that we are lazy. Busy and active, sure, but lazy to the core. We hit the ‘easy’ button whenever possible.

So when the hike we planned is met with inclement weather, we really do think twice. Then a third time. Even a fourth. Then we get tired of thinking so we just go ahead and do it.

The start of the trail. Looks awesome!

The Tivedens National Park offers many hikes and our plan was to do 2 different 6km loops, each of them starting from the parking lot – this fact was instrumental in our decision to go ahead because it meant we’d be able to abort the second loop if the weather got to bad. Spoiler alert: we only did one loop.

The park is gorgeous – relatively untouched as far as human intervention goes. The rocks and boulders that were deposited here during the Ice Age are spectacular. The trees are so tall and towering. The tree roots are a huge pain in the butt.

Can I get the hikers out there to teach me how to look up at the amazing things I should be looking at while walking along unpredictable terrain so I don’t trip and break a leg? Anyone? Please?

The crazy terrain does make the hike interesting.

What made today type 2 fun? The tree roots were everywhere. It was either drizzling or raining. Or pouring. The rain made the tree roots slippery on top of them being just regular tripping hazards. There were some significant scrambles and questionable ‘paths’ to get through. So, yeah, doing the hike was not exactly ‘fun’.

Drowned rat #1. Drowned rat #2 is holding the camera.

BUT.

When we were safely in the car getting warm and dry eating our lunch, we couldn’t stop talking about it. How it was interesting. Challenging. Beautiful. Exhilarating. Fun. Dammit. It was fun.

Yep. Type 2 fun is still fun. Just don’t call us hikers.

Uhm. I feel like this brochure could be at any of the parks back home!

We have the memory…not the picture.

We live in one of the most beautiful places in the world and the beauty of the Lofoten Islands comes in a very close second. The landscape just begs to be explored. How could we refuse? Would you expect it to be so green at 68.2 degrees north? We certainly didn't....

Our last day in Finland gets us to the Arctic Circle (brrr) and Santa's Village. I know, I know, we're not at THE North Pole, but I could be convinced that this really is Santa's Village. Or maybe it is just his summer home. If this is Santa's summer getaway...he must...

Ice Ice Baby

After two days of beautiful sunshine and high temperatures, we woke up to the cold and the rain. We could let this ruin our day OR we could double down. Yep, when things get cold, we get colder. Walking through a giant igloo! We had heard of an ice cave only a few...

Hiking and Camping???

Okay...but in the loosest way possible. You know us. We barely hike and we certainly don't camp. So the fact that today had a surprise hike (and we weren't even a bit phased by it, or upset) and that we ended up in a campground...well...who the heck are we?? This is...
