…You better believe we will be there!
One of our most favourite ways to discover the culture of a country is to take a cooking class. Although, let’s be real. All of the ways to discover a culture are our favourite. But at least in a cooking class, we get to eat. And if it is not good, it is likely our fault. And let’s be real again. It has always been good. Excellent, in fact. But I digress.
We met 25 year old Wissal in her family home on the outskirts of Casablanca. We braved not one, but two trams, a bus and a walk through some questionable terrain to find her. And we are so glad we did. She welcomed us with open arms and a smile that warmed our hearts.
We’ve already mentioned that we are here during Ramadan, a religious holiday that we are not entirely educated on. Wissal was amazing at answering all of our questions and offering up so much information and insight into how and why they celebrate. The fact that her and her family were fasting while we were busy cooking away in her kitchen was not lost on us. Their sacrifice today was extra.
Jason and I were so looking forward to (finally!) eating a traditional Moroccan meal and we were not disappointed. We were served the most delicious spiced coffee. I don’t like coffee. Not even a little bit, but throw in some cardamom, cinnamon, ginger, pepper and cloves and I am on board. I had two cups. We then made a simple cucumber and tomato salad, a traditional green mint tea, a chicken tagine and an alcohol free mojito.
We were so happy. We were very well fed. We were excellent cooks.
First item we’re going to buy when we get back home?
A tagine.
