The one week trip that spurred this entire eleven-week trip we are actually doing started today. We set sail from the city of Split, across the Adriatic Sea to Postira on the island of Brac, just over an hour away. Once there, we are responsible for getting our bikes sorted out – do they fit us? What needs adjusting? Do we have everything we need?
Yes!? Good. Is the weather perfect? Surprisingly, also yes. Perfect.
Okay, hop on and start pedalling. However, and it was made abundantly clear, this is not a race. We are all on vacation. We are not trying out for any level of any cycling team. ENJOY the ride. Stop, take pictures, go at your own pace. Considering that I was one of 6 people who wasn’t riding an e-bike, I appreciated this advice.
At the halfway point, we stopped in Supetar for a coffee and snack break. We had plenty of time to walk around a bit, check out the church and bell tower (every town here has at least that!) and get some town sign pictures.
Then came the climb. As long as it was, it was worth it. The viewpoints at the top we stunning. Of course we captured those moments as well. We may even have dawdled a bit to give our lungs that much more time to recover.
After 28km, we arrived at Molina where our boat was waiting to take us to the next island, Hvar. Almost two hours later and we’ve arrived at Stari Grad, literally “Old Town”. Ivan, one of our guides, takes us through the city. It is cute and quaint and we can’t believe that people live here. And true to form, there is a church and a bell tower. LOL.
Day one of biking is in the books.
