We only have one destination today, the Engelszell Abbey – it was the last Trappist monastery in Austria. Yes…beer made by monks.
Even the rain let up for us to see a bit more on the road here, unfortunately they have huge barriers on the side of the motorway that blocks the view. I’m sure the scenery is majestic on the other side.
Time for us to fuel up – a sandwich for me and pasta for Janelle

The Abbey is ornate and somehow just feels different inside from other churches we’ve visited. There are warrior statues and mummified remains everywhere. Let’s hope they keep the mummies away from the brewery.

But onto the beer – the reason we’re staying here. Well, I wish I could say more about it – the first one was an unremarkable, very drinkable light beer, the second a 10.5% dark beer with a complex profile. There wasn’t really any information about the brewing process, and the entire experience was a retail room with a counter where you ordered food & snacks. The whole experience was very underwhelming as we walked away.

Janelle did win all three games of Crib, however, I made a comeback with Crazy 8s.
