Back in the road again this morning, today’s goal? The Sahara Desert!

I had a funny thought this morning…we have never been so close to Timbuktu. A place that was always referenced in my childhood to say how impossibly far something was. Now, a mear 1600 kms away in neighbouring Mali – but that’s another trip.

Back to today and first time to see some amazing gorges. The first is the one that we stayed in, the Dades Gorge.

Then the Todgha Gorge. This one we actually saw climbers heading up the side of the cliff. And there’s always an opportunity to buy souvenirs if you’re so inclined.

An artisan has removed the stone from around the fossil

After lunch we stop at a fossils store where they collect boulders, slice them open to expose the fossils, then buff the slab up for sale. But wait, there’s more…trinkets, tables, display pieces for your grand foyer, and yes even the kitchen sink.

A quick stop on the way to the desert to see if we’re in the market for new threads

After the fossil stop our plan for us is to stop short of our camp and climb on our camels to ride into the desert. And it is amazing. It’s like we are the only two around it’s that vast.

Once at the foot of the large dune they set us free for the next hour before sunset. Of course, we go check out the big dune!

Unfortunately this afternoon we won’t see the sun set because of the overcast skies . Hopefully we’ll have better luck tomorrow.
