Biking to Pollenca

Biking to Pollenca

The plan today was to wake up early and bike into the town of Pollenca, about 15 km away. Half of that plan worked out. We were both surprised to see 10:00am on the clock when we finally woke up. Wow. No time to waste, let’s get showered, dressed and on our bikes. It was really nice to get a full night’s sleep though.

There is a huge market on Sundays, we didn’t want to miss it. 15km should easily take us an hour, even with my very slow bike (and legs). Not going to lie, it may have taken more than an hour. And it may have almost killed me. What the heck is going on???

Ah well, we are here now and can enjoy the chaos of the market. There were all kinds of vendors; food, jewellery, clothing, alcohol, etc. Interesting, but nothing we wanted to both buy and carry back to the hotel room. I like to think we are smart enough to know not to do that! Especially not that leg of ham. But oh, we so wanted one!

Instead, we found a nice cafe in the middle of the Plaza Mayor. Our backdrop is a gorgeous church and so many people crowding the area. There are more vendors, restaurants, florists, kids and tourists in every corner. It was so lively and bustling. A great place to stop for a cold drink and some tapas. Chicken Croquets for the win, by the way.

There was no more stalling. We had to tackle the one other item that seemed really interesting here in Pollenca. The Calvari Steps. Yep. More physical activity. 365 stairs leading up to a chapel and a viewpoint. Luckily, the steps were not very steep and you could walk them quite easily. Unluckily, you were in full sun for about 95% of the climb. Normally that wouldn’t bother me at all, but, well, age I guess. It was hot!! 32 degrees and not a lick of a breeze. Phew. But we made it. No problem at all. Is it time for ice cream yet??

Back to the bikes. Only 15km back to the hotel. Easy peasy. Right? Nope. I feel like I should first mention that the ride itself is beautiful. The roads are well maintained and they are lined with trees or farms, greenery and gorgeous stone walls. You are surrounded by views of mountains or landscapes that stretch out before you. It truly is magical. However, I did not enjoy any of that. Nope. I did not even make it back to the hotel. 3km away, Jason had to leave me, go get the van and come back to pick me up. OMG. This is not how Mallorca riding was supposed to go!

Oh well, back at the hotel, we jumped at the chance to get into the pool. That was a life saver. The pool was perfection and we still had over 3 hours of daylight and sunshine to enjoy it. Some cold drinks and hot snacks later, we were the happy travelers we usually are again. Phew!

Obrigada Porto, but it is time to move on.

We loved walking around Porto, the riverfront there is amazing, so lively and vibrant. It was bittersweet saying goodbye to it because it means that our time here in Portugal is drawing to a close (boo!) and there is still so much of the country that we want to see....
