Korean adventure day 6 (90km, 465m)

South Korea | 2024
The (bike) trip has truly started. I was extremely nervous about riding with full paniers and having to push my knee and strength to the limit. But, except for needing help getting on and off my bike (thanks Dan!) because I don’t have the geometry or mobility to get around the paniers it was much easier than I expected. Phew.

A 90km day that started off so easy. Flat, bike path, awesome weather and great scenery along the Hyeongsangang River which we followed until it opened up into the East Sea at Pahong. Here we had some fun playing on the beach until we went for lunch.
It is also safe to say that it is here that we were all feeling pretty confident in our ability to easily make the next 70km in five hours. We were not bothered at all by taking a very long lunch break. Almost two hours in fact. A bit of foreshadowing here…that decision may have been the wrong one.

Then we found the hills. ALL of the hills. On a highway. With cars. Without a shoulder. The last 30km were very difficult. Big UPS, seemingly teeny downs. And we rolled into our hotel in the dark. There was just so much to see and do in the 90km that it took us almost 11 hours to reach Yeongdeok.
It was 100% worth it.

Lesson learned – don’t plan a 90km day for the first day. There are just way too many new sights, smells, sounds, views, and you best believe we had to stop and experience each one of them! So, when we rolled into our hotel tired, weary, a little scared and a little scarred, we regrouped and vowed to do better the next day.
