Road Trip, Anyone?

Road Trip, Anyone?

Before any good road trip starts, if you can’t find a Timmies, you must find a bakery. That was our first task of the day and boy, were we ever successful! We must have been STARVING going in because I think we ordered one of everything. We didn’t even feel guilty. Or like pigs. We walked out of there with our hands full and smiles on our faces. I’m also not ashamed to say we finished everything. Not a crumb left over. So delicious!

We sat ourselves down in front of an amazing church to eat our breakfast. We were so impressed by the church facade that we just had to go inside. Again, of course it was stunning. Opulent. Huge. Showy. This was the first time we got to go into a section of the basement though. That was a little bit creepy. We felt like a cross between Nicholas Cage in National Treasure and Tom Hanks in Da Vince Code. On that note, we decided to leave – not only the church, but the very, very cute city of Bamberg. We will come back here for sure!

Jason drove us 4.5 hours to Berlin. Well, that was how long it should have taken us. But, Germany being Germany, we were able to drive a little bit faster than 120km/hr. So, even with the numerous and lengthy construction zones where we were only allowed to do 60-80km/hour, we made it all the way to Berlin in under 3.5 hours. Yep. He shaved a full hour off the recommended driving time. Vroom vroom.

Knowing there was a ton of historical information that we were going to learn about, we decided to start our Berlin experience with food tour. You know, to keep it light and frivolous before getting into the heavy. I will admit that I was concerned about what we were going to be fed on the tour – I am getting a little bit tired of German food. We needn’t have worried! Berlin is a huge city with all kinds of international influences. We got to try a few of the favourites and truly eat like a Berlin local.

First up was a donair. Yep, it was pretty delicious. Donuts, curry sausage (I know, I know, enough with the sausages!), local sodas and a German take on a Spanish frittata. Luckily it was also a walking tour because, holy moly, there was a lot of food!

So far, Berlin has us happily fed, well exercised and properly tired.

Gute Nacht!

We have the memory…not the picture.

We live in one of the most beautiful places in the world and the beauty of the Lofoten Islands comes in a very close second. The landscape just begs to be explored. How could we refuse? Would you expect it to be so green at 68.2 degrees north? We certainly didn't....

Our last day in Finland gets us to the Arctic Circle (brrr) and Santa's Village. I know, I know, we're not at THE North Pole, but I could be convinced that this really is Santa's Village. Or maybe it is just his summer home. If this is Santa's summer getaway...he must...

Reindeer on the road

Still basking in the glow of yesterday’s race, we start heading up the road again. This has all the hallmarks of one hell of a Korean horror movie Our first pit stop is a roadside art exhibit called The Silent People. About a thousand ‘peat-headed characters’ in a...

Our day starts off slowly today with a visit to the local Heritage Park. A collection of buildings and dwellings found in the surrounding communities brought together. We are here early enough in the season that we have two private guides, one who just started 3 days...

Hiking and Camping???

Okay...but in the loosest way possible. You know us. We barely hike and we certainly don't camp. So the fact that today had a surprise hike (and we weren't even a bit phased by it, or upset) and that we ended up in a campground...well...who the heck are we?? This is...

Fortresses, Fresh Noodles & Finnish Saunas

A nice slow start to our day today as we didn’t crack the door to outside until noon. Sometimes you need these days and this was one of those days. It allowed us to recharge ourselves for exploration, to get set to see Suomenlinna or Sveaborg. It’s the fortress at the...
