Korean Adventure Day 3 (48km, 267m)

Seoul, Korea | 2024

Okay. Today is THE day. Will I be able to do it? Will I have to wave good-bye to my peeps as they ride away without me? I am sick to my stomach with nerves.

Han River, Seoul | 2024

As it turns out, needlessly so. (For those of you who don’t know, I tore my ACL and MCL on Aug 25. Crushing my competition chances and seriously hindering my bike trip odds.) I got on the gravel bike the shop picked out for me and rode it around the block like a pro. Yay!! This just might work out for me. The real test came as we did an easy test ride around the Han River. 50km, so flat it was almost downhill and no wind. Could not ask for better conditions. On top of being such an easy ride, we passed through some very scenic areas. Parks galore filled with people picnicking, playing soccer, biking, and just having a great time outdoors. We biked through quiet marsh areas, busy playgrounds, and everything in between on a very beautifully kept bike path. Success!! I made it! SQUEEEEE!!!

Buckwheat Lunch | 2024

Along the way we stopped at another Korean specialty restaurant serving everything buckwheat – we had noodles, tea, alcohol. Yummy! We even tried another of their specialties, pheasant dumplings with buckwheat casings. A huge advantage of travelling with locals, you get to find all these unique places.

Korean Spa, Seoul | 2024

After the ride we did a Korean Spa. Aaahhh. Perfection. We were given some generic shorts and a t-shirt then we got to join up in the common areas and enjoy. There were so many different areas and rooms to try out. Heated beds, heated salt crystals you could cover yourself in, saunas and more. What a great way to finish off a day of cycling.

Seoul, Korea | 2024

I am quickly learning that you can never have too much food, so we made our way to another restaurant to enjoy a Pork BBQ dinner. That’s right, the magic animal. Sooooo good! Our table was filled with so many dishes, so many textures, so many different flavours. Amazing.

Tonight we’re eating with the Vikings and their gods Odin, Thor and the twins, Freyr & Freyja. But first, there’s a mountain to climb. Offersøykammen, a hike that should take us no more to an 3 hours, but with over 450m of elevation gain in less than 4km…this...

We have the memory…not the picture.

We live in one of the most beautiful places in the world and the beauty of the Lofoten Islands comes in a very close second. The landscape just begs to be explored. How could we refuse? Would you expect it to be so green at 68.2 degrees north? We certainly didn't....

Our last day in Finland gets us to the Arctic Circle (brrr) and Santa's Village. I know, I know, we're not at THE North Pole, but I could be convinced that this really is Santa's Village. Or maybe it is just his summer home. If this is Santa's summer getaway...he must...

Reindeer on the road

Still basking in the glow of yesterday’s race, we start heading up the road again. This has all the hallmarks of one hell of a Korean horror movie Our first pit stop is a roadside art exhibit called The Silent People. About a thousand ‘peat-headed characters’ in a...

Our day starts off slowly today with a visit to the local Heritage Park. A collection of buildings and dwellings found in the surrounding communities brought together. We are here early enough in the season that we have two private guides, one who just started 3 days...

Hiking and Camping???

Okay...but in the loosest way possible. You know us. We barely hike and we certainly don't camp. So the fact that today had a surprise hike (and we weren't even a bit phased by it, or upset) and that we ended up in a campground...well...who the heck are we?? This is...

Fortresses, Fresh Noodles & Finnish Saunas

A nice slow start to our day today as we didn’t crack the door to outside until noon. Sometimes you need these days and this was one of those days. It allowed us to recharge ourselves for exploration, to get set to see Suomenlinna or Sveaborg. It’s the fortress at the...
