Friends – they’re great to hang out with, drink beers and share some stories. But do they travel the same way you do? Do they walk everywhere or take a taxi? Do they stay in 5-star hotels or 1-star hostels?
Can you travel with them and have the friendship endure? You won’t know until you try.
Fortunately, we’ve only had great experiences travelling with friends. We’ve gone to the all-inclusive resorts with some friends while spending 3 weeks touring on a group/bus tour through southeast Asia with others.
Planning with friends for all-inclusive trips (either touring or sitting by a pool) are fairly easy. Find dates that work for everyone and book the resort or tour. Then your biggest challenge is finding the balance between spending time with friends and not.
When you are your own tour guide there are many more influences on decisions – schedule, tastes, price point. We had our last brainstorming session with another couple; we were picking dates, hotels, entertainment, and whomever had their device open to what we picked, booked and paid for it. Then on tour, things like dinners, drinks, taxis were paid for as they came up.
After we got home and we each tallied up our spending to settle up who owed who for the trip – magic happened – we were within $10 of each other. Wow! I’m not sure if we can do it again, but there’s only one way to find out.
