Let me say this first, we’ve been very lucky with the teachers that our kids have had through their schooling. They have been great, always focused on our kids and attentive to their needs. However, there was one time that I had to keep my mouth shut.
The beginning of this story starts on my 3-day trip Hong Kong with a friend and my son Ethan. After which I travelled to China again popping over to Beijing with my daughter Anna and a couple of buddies, and one of their daughters. We spent a few days there seeing the Forbidden City, The Great Wall, tons of shopping and a generous helping of Peking Duck.

Upon returning home Janelle started planning her trip. Her trip was to be with the girls – somewhere warm and somewhere exotic. Janelle spun the globe, with her finger landing on…Egypt! However, this was not what the girls expected. This was not Mexico or the Caribbean! Janelle’s girls’ trip turned into a family trip – lucky for the rest of us!
At this point, Ethan was in Grade 1 and Anna in Kindergarten, and I was breaking the news to Anna’s teacher that she would not be in school the next week as we were going to be away. That Anna would be in Cairo experiencing yet another culture, seeing camels and pyramids!
I expected her response to be amazement and happy for Anna. That Anna had this great opportunity to see both The Great Wall of China, and The Pyramids of Giza within 6 months of each other. However, Anna’s teacher replied that it was too bad she wasn’t going to be in school next week as Anna would be missing a student lead presentation. But…camels, pyramids, mummies, Egyptian culture.
Oh well, Anna missed her Kindergarten’s student lead thing, but experienced all those things we thought we would, plus so much more – not everything is learned in school. It was a fantastic trip – and is Janelle’s most favourite one. But that is another story.
