It’s not often we are with our parents at 9:30 am drinking shots of whiskey before even having breakfast. In front of our young, impressionable children. In fact, I will say with 100% certainty that it has only happened once. Can you guess the country where that happened? If you’re thinking that it just has to be Ireland, you’d be right.
To be fair, this was not our intention, nor was it our plan A. But, well, there are only so many hours in a day. When we travel, we do our very best to fill them all and experience as much as we can in a very short time. This particular event was supposed to happen at the end of a jam-packed day:

Northern Ireland, | 2015
- Ogham Stone Inscription
- Ulster American Folk Park in Omagh
- Barry’s Amusement Park in Portrush
- Bushmills Distillery (drinking shots of whiskey here)
- Get to our B&B
See? We had planned to do the Bushmills Distillery at the end of our day, thinking it would be a perfect way to cap off the crazy. Besides, we had to leave early the next morning to get to the Giant’s Causeway. I’m sure you can imagine that trying to leave an amusement park filled with rides and games and cotton candy is not such an easy feat when you’re with an 11- and 12-year-old. The target audience.
We did not make it to Bushmills.

Bushmills | 2015
Hoping we could maybe do a late night tour – a ghost tour perhaps?? – we noticed the actual hours of operation. Ghost tours were not an option, but a crack of dawn, see you before breakfast, start your day off right tour was available. A bit of discussion, a bit of hedging, but finally – Yes, let’s do it! We signed up for the 8:30am experience the next morning. Huh. Persevere enough and you can squeeze it all in! We just had to slightly adjust our start time for the next adventures and stomach some good ole Irish whiskey in the morning.
Guess what? The only thing better than capping off a crazy day with a shot of Bushmills’ finest is starting your crazy day with that shot.
Slante!
